3 布魯克林大橋一則堅毅的故事
第一段
大約在150年前一位名叫作John Roebling的工程師想興建一座巨大的吊橋來連接曼哈頓與布魯克林這座橋是有必要的因為每天有數以千計的人只能搭小船橫渡東河到另一區去但是John Roebling想建造的吊橋比當時全世界的任何其他吊橋都還要長得多他的計畫似乎行不通全世界的專家都認為他一定是瘋了才會想試著建造這樣的吊橋他們說這項工作簡直就是不可能完成

1 About 150 years ago, an engineer named John Roebling wanted to build a huge suspension bridge to connect Manhattan and Brooklyn.

然而John與他的兒子Washington並不放棄他們僱用一組工人開始興建他們的夢想之橋一開始計畫進行順利但不幸的是John在工程興建期間身受創傷不久因感染而病故之後在另一次意外中Washington的腦部受到創傷結果使得他無法言語也無法走路每個人都認為這個造橋計畫將會告終因為只有Roebling家族才知道橋樑的設計

然而Washington依然明白這座橋是值得建造的雖然他只能移動一根手指頭但是他的心智依然敏銳藉著移動這根手指頭Washington慢慢發展出一套與他太太Emily溝通的密碼他把訊息輕拍在她的手臂上透過這種方式Emily就能夠把Washington的指令傳達給建造團隊Emily甚至研讀高階數學與橋樑工程以便能指導團隊歷經13她幫助丈夫實現他的夢想最後橋樑終於完工了橋樑的開通典禮在1883524盛大舉行Emily是第一位走過橋樑的人

A Trip to New York
Sean and Albert met Kate on their way back home. Sean is asking about Kate’s trip to New York this summer vacation.
Sean:      I hear you’re going to New York City.
Kate:      Yes, I’m going to Manhattan with my family.
Albert:    I’m sure you’ll enjoy the Big Apple.
Kate:      Brooklyn is near Manhattan, isn’t it?
Sean:      Yes. It’s across the East River. Why do you ask?
Kate:      I have recently read the touching story about how the Brooklyn Bridge was constructed.
Sean:      It is regarded as a symbol of great determination.
Kate:      That’s why I hope to see it!
Albert:    Good idea. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in New York City.
Kate:      I would like to do more sightseeing. Could you recommend some tourist spots?
Sean:      There are a lot of things to see and do in New York City. You may also visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Kate:      You’re right! I never thought of that.
Sean:      Well, New York is a wonderful city. I think you’ll have a good time there.
